The northern polar jet stream, a band of high-altitude winds that circles the Arctic and influences the local weather of the northern hemisphere, is forecast to begin noticeably shifting within the 2060s if greenhouse emissions stay excessive, resulting in dramatic modifications in temperature and rainfall, particularly in Europe.

“This may have drastic penalties for society,” says Matthew Osman on the College of Arizona. “However the final trajectory of the jet stream continues to be largely below our management.”
