In a podcast in regards to the New York Metropolis Housing Authority that was shared Sunday, Schumer recalled his days as a state consultant when he skilled neighborhood resistance to housing for folks with disabilities.
“Once I first was an assemblyman, they needed to construct a congregate residing place for retarded youngsters. The entire neighborhood was towards it,” Schumer mentioned. “These are innocent youngsters. They only wanted some assist.”
Schumer drew criticism for his comment, and his workplace issued an apology.
“For many years, Sen. Schumer has been an ardent champion for enlightened coverage and full funding of providers for folks with mental and developmental disabilities,” Schumer’s spokesperson mentioned in a press release, per the Wrap. “He’s sincerely sorry for his use of the outdated and hurtful language.”
